Historic Watchtower At Slieve League Cliffs
Reader Question: How will I manage to visit the Atlantic coast at Slieve League Cliffs if I have no car? Will there be guided day tours organised, and will they be functioning in mid April? I saw the Donegal Tours website (link opens new window). When are their tours running exactly? I plan to stay at the Radisson Blu Hotel Letterkenny from about April twelfth to twentieth. But I won't have my private car as I'll be flying into Dublin Airport from France. Please help me with precise details. Thank you. Jeanine
Our Reply: Hello Jeanine. We researched this for you and, yes, you can get to the Slieve League Cliffs from Letterkenny in mid-April, even if you don't have your own car (Car hire is available though (link opens new window), so that's always another option).
The Highlander Tour (link opens new window) by Donegal Tours, the company that you mentioned in your question, seems to be the most compatible in terms of what you're looking for. This popular guided day tour takes you to a variety of attractions along Donegal's dramatic Wild Atlantic Way, including the magnificent Slieve League Cliffs. (The Wild Atlantic Way touring route spans Ireland's entire western coastline.)
Other highlights of the Highlander Tour include the bustling historic center of Donegal Town, as well as Killybegs fishing port with its pretty harbor, and the charming thatched roof Celtic cottages of Glencolmcille Folk Village.
While some tour companies only operate from May to September, Donegal Tours offer additional guided day tours by private arrangement. The private tours start in advance of the regular seasonal service. They would probably be available to you during your planned mid-April vacation. And because they're by private arrangement, you get to choose the exact attractions you'd like to see. So you could take the Highlander Tour for instance, or you could combine the Slieve League Cliffs with other favorite attractions.
You mentioned in your follow-up question Day Tours From Donegal Town that you'll now be staying there. Donegal Town is certainly more convenient for visiting the Slieve League Cliffs. However, just in case you go back to your original plan of staying at the Radisson Blu Hotel Letterkenny, Donegal Tours would collect you and your party from there or from another location of your choice.
Here's where you can reserve your private day tour online at Donegal Tours. You can also book and make inquiries by e-mailing info@donegaltours.ie, or by phoning 00353 74 913 5460 from outside Ireland and 074 913 5460 within Ireland.
You might find these Donegal Tours TripAdvisor reviews helpful (link opens new window). You'll find comments there about the Highlander Tour and others, as well as the private tours.
